Woodbine Entertainment Group launched WEGZ and Turf Lounge in an effort to take the traditional teletheatre concept to the next level by housing it within a popular and entertaining destination that could reach out to a larger, but still specific, audience.
As a starting point, Woodbine began with a traditional model for a sports bar while designing WEGZ, but plans for the 23,000-square foot space in Vaughan developed at such a pace that the term ‘sports bar’ no longer did the attraction justice.
As a result, WEGZ became the country’s first ‘Stadium Bar’ – an award winning sports bar with an extra potent stretch kick.
The WEGZ experience revolves around the customer’s ability to see, hear, and essentially, feel the game. It begins when the fan sits down at his or her table or booth. The 10 big-screen High Definition television screens that wrap around the perimeter of the main room are impossible to miss. Each is 10 feet high by 10 feet wide. For larger appetites, there is also a 16-foot by 22-foot High Definition theatre-style screen.
From personal sets within each booth or mounted screens at the bar, WEGZ is furnished with over 90 televisions that air major league sporting events from around the world. A state-of-the-art audio system comes complete with end-zone horns and goal judge sirens whenever the home-screen scores. A sports ticker weaves its way around the room, providing the latest scores from around each league.
In between periods or at half-time, fans can stretch their legs in the WEGZ interactive area, perhaps playing a short round on the full-swing golf simulator, shifting gears in the Fast and Furious arcade, or shooting a game of nine-ball.
The same care and quality that has gone into the WEGZ ambience has found its way into the kitchen. The WEGZ menu is dotted with the succulent entrees and appetizers. From wings to ribs or any of the kitchen’s array of stone-fired pizzas, there are countless options from which to choose.
Every fan, at some point during his or her WEGZ outing, is exposed to the sport of kings in one way or another. Whether it’s the Sandy Hawley memorabilia, or the quaint, comfortable, off-track betting lounge, complete with live mutuel tellers and self-serve terminals, new horse racing customers are born at WEGZ each day.
Turf Lounge harnesses the same synergy at WEGZ, except with Toronto’s business clientele. Chic, sleek, and contemporary, Turf Lounge is nestled downtown near the corner of Bay Street and Adelaide Street.
The bar area features vaulted ceilings and sophisticated décor. Three distinct private rooms are available for meetings and parties, and the Turf Lounge’s 60 monitors and plasma screens, showing horse racing, sports and business news, are discreetly placed to maintain its elegant appeal.
Fine wines and cocktails, as well as top-quality cuisine are available to satisfy the customer’s appetite, while they entertain their clients or wind down after a long day.
